  • This is a bit about the history of Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Puāwaitanga o Te Pito Mata, which still influences how we run the kōhanga today.

In October 2017, the then Chief Executive of the National Kōhanga Reo Trust, Kararaina Cribb, offered for a new kōhanga to be established at a property the national trust had purchased in Raureka.

Dr Jermey Tātere MacLeod and Te Rina MacLeod took on the challenge. They spoke early on to Sir Tīmoti Kāretu about their hopes for the kōhanga – to be a place for whānau committed to raising tamariki with te reo Māori as the primary language. Tīmoti gave the name of Te Puāwaitanga o Te Pito Mata as a way to recognise the foundation that this kōhanga has been built on.

The kōhanga was opened with a ceremony which established its kawa which is still followed today – karakia Māori and karakia ringatū.

NŌ REIRA, HE AHA TE ĀHUA O TE WHARE INĀIANEI?

SO, WHAT’RE WE UP TO NOW?
